French is a language spoken around the world as a mother tongue by more then 110 million people and as a second language by 400 million in more then 60 countries. Most of the people for whom French is a native language live in France. Other important French speaking countries are: Canada, Belgium, Switzerland, French-speaking African countries (31 countries, among them are Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Gabon), Luxembourg and Monaco, as well as some states of the USA.

French is a part of the Roman languages family, along with Spanish, Italian and Portuguese etc. It plays important role internationally as an official language in around 30 countries and United Nation as well as other international organizations. It is also the third widely spoken second language of the EU. It is known that more then 20,000 English words actually derived from French ones.  Historically up to the middle of XXth century, French also was a major language of diplomacy and also a lingua franca for the European intellectuals.

French is a also a business language. Many of the biggest corporations are of the French origin or have their subsidiaries in France. Hi-Tech and medicine also speak French. Some of the most important concepts in contemporary social science come from France, too.

France is famous by its designers, painters, artists, writers, musicians, chefs and movie makers which have had a significant influence over world culture.

French is known to be the language of religious and intellectual elite. Michel Foucault has founded postmodernism, Mr. Calvin reframed Protestantism; such writers as Voltaire move forward human rights.

French is a standard in tourist industry. Paris is known to be one of the most visited cities worldwide, and France is the second most tourist visited country of the world. French is also widely known as a language of romance.

So, command of French helps you to open the doors into all these fascinating areas where it is widely used.
